Your dream job

A dream job is something many long for but few achieve. Often life gets in the way of our carefully laid plans or we are simply stuck in a situation where the money is just not available to achieve those plans. In my case, my dream job from grade school on was to be a mother. From the time I was 10, with a baby on my hip everywhere I went, that was the only dream I had. Time progressed and I did, indeed, become the mother of three wonderful boys. Time continued to progress and so did my boys. Grown and on their own, my dream job had been fulfilled, so now what?

Not being particularly skilled or educated in a specific field, I did what anyone else would do, I got a job where I could be trained. Inspecting circuit boards proved only slightly challenging and definitely monotonous. Moving on to a packing plant was almost certainly a step back and even more monotonous. In between all of this monotony I began making gift baskets as a side hobby. This is where I discovered my dream job! Starting with simple enough styles for babies and holidays, I set about trying my hand at a variety of ways to put together an attractive looking basket and lo and behold, they sold! Time continued to march on and as the baskets became more attractive, people began buying more of them.

Adding personalized candy wrappers and other small gifts, I have manged to build up a small following but changing jobs has hurt me in this last year since the bulk of my selling I did at work. However, I am building up a following at this job as well and have developed some profitable connections outside of work as well.

Marketing is the hardest part of starting a business, even when you have a product that sells itself. I now take a picture of everything I make and have a catalog that I make myself, to get more business. Not having a shop of my own, I rely on friends and acquaintances to display my work. Living in a small town outside a small city, people are still quite hospitable here and I usually get a good response.

My dream job would be to go into this gift business full time and to write childrens books. My plan is to establish this business, enabling me to quit the packing job, then to start on my childrens books. My hearts desire is to be able to go to hospitals and read to children and bring baskets to the children who do not have people to visit them or have parents that cannot afford gifts. There is no greater reward in life to be working at where your creativity lies and to be giving back to society. I am blessed to have what I have and my hearts desire is to bless others.

Never give up on a dream! If you have a desire to do something but do not possess the ways and means for it, learn all you can about what it takes to achieve that goal and begin doing it one step at a time. Baby steps lead to success and time marches on no matter what. It's been five years since I started making baskets and I see my dream coming true in the next few years!
