"A Day at the Beach"

She's there, at the beach
It's not really a reach
The sand hot beneath her small feet
In her sharp ears
Erasing all fears
The crash of the surf on repeat.

She lets the sun play
As her woes slip away
The endless ocean stretching forever
Fingers caress sand
She closes her hand
And finds, with delight, a gull feather.

With pail and spade
A construction is made
A castle for the sand people to loot
Shells from the ocean
Adorn this with devotion
Later, the waves accept her tribute.

A day filled with joys
Beach balls and toys
That all enhance beach life so well
She swims and plays
In such wonderful ways
The beach has never been a hard sell.

The scent is of brine
As she spends her time
In sand, surf and sun without rancor
Until she's dragged back
With a voice, a sharp crack
A cry from her mother, as anchor.

She opens her eyes
To her soft surprise
Her daydream almost out of reach
She sits in her sandbox
Right down on her buttocks
But there, in her mind, it's the beach.
