"Unearthing Past and Present"

We excavate the city streets
We dig down deep and low
We find scraps, fragments, teasing pieces
Of what happened to us, long ago.

We've unearthed the old roadways and paths
Buildings buried and rotten
We've learned of the world that once was
And those people that lived then, forgotten.

Occasional treasures still rise to the surface
Valuables golden and shining
From the ancient city beneath our tired feet
And a past that is slowly unwinding.

Downward we go in our search
On the hunt for important things
Occasionally finding skeletal remains
Of men with horns and with wings.

We know, now, how the city was broken
How the people were scattered and lost
We learned of the war, between Heaven and Hell
We learned, my poor children, the cost.

The excavations still continue today
Revelations from beneath us eternal
To tell us the tales of the past, dead and gone
Of the time ancient New York went Infernal.
