Poetry: Being overwhelmed

"Life Overwhelming"

You sit alone, hurt, in the playground
Bruised, bloodied, battered and beaten
Your bus money has once again been stolen
And of course your packed lunch has been eaten.
In your soft eyes tears start to well up
Those bullies make you feel really blue
But stop for a moment and ask yourself this
What would Captain James T Kirk do?

Well, he'd organize an Away Team

With himself cast in the lead
Then beam on down to the planet
And make the flora and fauna scream.
He'd shoot the Hell out of everything
Then sleep with the exotic alien girl
Captain Kirk's got it all figured out
Why don't YOU give it a whirl?

You're trapped in the Meeting from Hell
With a boss that's having a fit
Screaming and ranting and punching the wall
Because you fudged the reports just a bit.
Tempers are frayed, you're about to be fired
OK, you deserve it, it's true
But to recover from this, just ask of yourself
What would Captain Jean Luc Picard do?

Picard would speak in his calm British accent
Soothing the hostile alien's mood and aura
But surreptitiously send over his Number One
To sleep with the alien's daughter.
With firm commands of "Make it so!" and "Engage!"
Picard would show his capable skills
He accomplished more with diplomacy and tact
Than Kirk did with phasers and kills.

You've got bill collectors on the phone
And annoying neighbours at the door
Your job's a stress, home life's a joke
You can't handle very much anymore.
Relatives come in from out of town
And they bug the heck right out of you
Take a deep breath and whisper so soft
What would Captain Benjamin Sisko do?

He had problems similar in nature to yours
Except a little weirder, I'd say
And with only a few deaths and exceptions
He managed to always save the day
Deal with the Ferengi, Bajorans, the Wormhole
Jem Hadar, Prophet Aliens, Cardassians,
Talk to some, blow up others, be just but be fair
And poison the shape shifter assassins.

You're stranded in the middle of nowhere
On a buss with near total strangers
Outside in the wilderness darkness has fallen
You just can't be sure of the dangers.
Someone has to stop worrying and lead the way
Through stress and through fear - and that's you!
Just pretend you have breasts, coif your hair right
And ask what would Captain Kathryn Janeway do?

First she'd organize the rabble of survivors
Into a Starfleet commanded crew
Assign them all important tasks
And make them all feel useful, too.
Then she'd lead them across the vastness of space
Recruiting a Borg in clothes so tight that they chafe
And except the ones who died on the way
She'd make sure they get home safe.

As you can see, when life's overwhelming
With stresses like a tidal wave
Towering over you, ready to crash
Chin up! It's time to be brave
Boldly go and deal with these things
Your Betazoid counselor knows that it's true
Take a breath, and shout out loud and proud
What would the Star Trek Captains do?

What is this that conquers me
