Poetry: Wild & free

"Swansong"

Almond eyes, cold and not amused
Flesh that blends into the background
Searching for signs of nature abused
And the marks of man that abound.

Barely visible to the naked eye
Dressed in leaf and bark and moss
With transparent wings, they really do fly
And at night sing their keen songs of loss.

The faeries or fairies, however you spell it
Fiercely prowl their borders for intrusion
They show courage, fortitude and true grit
And fight with both weapon and illusion.

The fae are losing, they realize
Man digs the Earth wide and deep
Their wondrous powers fail as our mundane ones rise
And upon their realms our cities creep.

They know their time wanes as they reach for the sky
And flit from tree to old tree
One day we will force them to change or to die
But for now, they are wild, they are free.
