Poetry: Ancient cities

by Bobby Coles

Created on: April 05, 2009   Last Updated: May 11, 2012

With ideals vastly different from our own

At the time, they were certainly the norm

A tapestry of history has been intricately sewn

Currently quite similar, only in unrecognizable form

From ancient cities, there is much we can glean

Stories to regale us and fill us with wonder

The grass back then was just as green

Their world merely torn asunder

Ancient cities hold keys to life's beginning

A fabled glimpse at who we once were

To not acknowledge them is sinning

Cauldron of witches' brews needing a stir

They dressed in a different style

Spoke in words no longer chosen

Untold enigmas to unfold by the mile

From an era considered frozen

Ancient cities tell fascinating tales

As their legacies are unearthed

Freeing memories from ancestral jails

From whom we were birthed

Pieces of preserved history

Romanticized places like Pompeii

They are no longer an unsolvable mystery

Their remains tell interesting stories of the day

Beautiful places that were once prosperous

Until some turmoil brought them to a halt

The clouds above them obviously ominous

Worth their weight in time honoured salt

Embrace the past with unrelenting zeal

Take a peek inside the mind of the past

Ancient cities were vibrant and real

Uncover the truths as to why they did not last

The history books unfold epic battles

Nobody heeds notice of the ancient cities

Some teachers employ the defibrillator paddles

Perhaps the odd archaeologist pities

Many tales can be formed from the rubble

Not enough people tend to invest care

Ancient cities are not today's trouble

Nothing more than an anecdotal to share

The ruins of Atlantis pique the odd curiosity

People flock to this geographic quirk

Interest in ancient cities lack a certain viscosity

Though pictures remain on their desktops at work

The ancient cities do not command much attention

Except for the determination of some

It is worthwhile, however, to mention

That it is imperative to know where we came from

Ancient cities, part of civilization

History has not left you alone

We are slowly coming to the realization

Our ancestral past has been set in stone

Allow the ghosts of those days to linger

Cultivate their dreams and stories

Point not one disparaging finger

Instead, marvel at ancient cities' past glories
