This is where it all begins...if you've heard the hype about Pirates of the Caribbean but have not yet gotten around to watching them, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl is where the story starts.
A dark, moonless night in a harbor town is shattered by the cannon of a mysterious black ship that appears out of nowhere to overrun the place. What is supposed to be an attack of chance looters takes a sinister turn when they abduct the governor's daughter Elizabeth (Keira Knightley), who wears a gold doubloon of particular interest to them. This particular doubloon was found on the person of one Will Turner, a boy set adrift at sea and discovered by the ship Elizabeth was sailing on. Fearing the boy was a pirate, young Elizabeth kept the piece a secret from everyone else. Now, older Elizabeth feels compelled to give the pirates her last name as Turner and it just so happens they're looking for a Turner for a special purpose.
Will (Orlando Bloom) is now a blacksmith in the town and desires to seek after the pirates aboard the strange ship, the Black Pearl, to rescue Elizabeth (who he's quite fond of). Unfortunately, no one knows where the Pearl
puts into harbor and thus have no way of tracking or locating the ship...that is, no way except for a drunken prisoner known as Ja...er, CAPTAIN
Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp). Seeing no other alternative Will frees the knave, who helps him abscond with a ship of the royal navy and sail after the Black Pearl.
Will quickly learns that the primary purpose in life for Jack Sparrow is looking after Jack Sparrow...that is, the slippery devil will do or say just about anything to achieve his ends including making truces to any and all sides of a dispute and promising many things to a lowly blacksmith in order to find his ship and the man who staged a mutiny against him, his former first mate Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush).
There is an even bigger problem...as Elizabeth finds out in short order in a rather unpleasant way...the crew of the Black Pearl
are cursed. By the light of day or the dark of night every man is as any other man, solid flesh and blood...but by the light of the moon they are rotting corpses, walking dead. These cursed cannot be killed, nor can they be returned to life without breaking the curse, which is the purpose for which the crew intends Elizabeth.
Swashbuckling action and great adventure on the high seas, that is what this film claims to portray...and it delivers. As a youngster I had a deep fascination
