moves quickly into Giselle's ordeals in New York City and finding out how "not nice" people can be while she tries to find her way through the throngs to the local castle where she might inquire of the rulers on the whereabouts of her beloved. The makers of this film did an excellent job of including all manner of standard Disney Princess fare and elements from a wide assortment of fairy tales (Giselle even spots "Grumpy" on the streets) and shows a very entertaining melding of the character of a traditional storybook princess with the most cynical of real worlders...a divorce attorney.
Finally, a role James Marsden shines in! Anyone who has read some of my previous reviews on films Marsden featured in (such as 10th and Wolf will know that I've never been particularly thrilled with his acting and thought that his one and only claim to fame must be his looks. Well, that's perfect for this role! Marsden plays a completely self-absorbed fairytale prince who can't see why anyone would think him less than perfect. Maybe the guy just needed a comedy role? Whatever the case, this is the first role I have ever seen him in that I thought he did a great job.
I've only seen Amy Adams once before as Susan in Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby but in both that and her role as Giselle there's one especially noticeable feature...this girl looks like she's having fun. It had to have been an exceptional challenge to get through the role of Giselle without breaking into uproarious laughter every few seconds. In my opinion Adams played the nave and wide-eyed Giselle to a T and was a lot of fun to watch.
Overall this is a great movie for the entire familythere are some parts I think only a kid could appreciate but the overall story is very entertaining, a unique sort of story, some stunning visual effects and is very clean for the younger viewers...there's just one part at the end that might be a little scary to kids but it's resolved quickly. Did I mention Susan Sarandon as an evil villain? Just another great part of a really fun movie.
