Movie reviews: Enchanted (2007)

Ever feel like the whole Disney Princesses thing was getting a little too monotonous and stereotypical? Well Giselle (Amy Adams) is another one just like all the others...she lives in a lonely house in the middle of the woods with all her woodland friends to keep her company where she sews and sings the days away waiting for her one true love to show up and sweep her away on his white horse to a shining castle where they'll live happily ever after. That day finally arrives when the dashing Prince Edward (James Marsden) arrives astride his noble steed, fresh from a troll hunt. The two instantly sing in perfect harmony and ride off into the sunset, to be married the next day.

But no fairy tale is complete without a wicked stepmother...indeed, Prince Edward has a particularly nasty and jealous stepmother (Susan Sarandon) who is not willing to give up her throne in the event of Edward's marriage. When Giselle arrives at the palace for her wedding the Queen disguises herself as an old crone and leads her to a wishing well...and pushes her in, banishing her to a horrific place where there is no happily ever after - New York.

Exit the world of animation to a modern-day New York where Giselle befriends a divorce attorney (Patrick Dempsey) named Robert Phillip. She doesn't know what divorce is, but she's happy to call all manner of "woodland creatures" (rats, pigeons, cockroaches and the like) to help with the housework and making herself some new dresses out of Robert's curtains while she waits for her Prince to arrive and rescue her. In the meantime, Prince Edward and the Queen's henchman Nathaniel (Timothy Spall) are running all over New York in full storybook regalia with the help of the chipmunk Pip trying to find the lost maiden.

As you can imagine the whole setup can turn into a pretty entertaining ordeal, not to mention put the whole idea of storybook love to the test...and don't worry, "real world" love gets held in the spotlight too. I wasn't sure what to expect when I watched this movie but the previews made it look cute and quite possibly hilarious so I added it to the Netflix queue. While there are some parts that are a bit too stereotypical and super-sweet these parts do flow well with the overall feel of the movie and are well worth bearing through to get to the parts where they make fun of them.

Pacing is great in this movie; we start out animated in a perfect Disney setup where Prince meets Princess and they take off to start their happily ever after and
