here it is, in the grand tradition of steadily declining cinema, the third movie weighing in at three stars.
The premise for this film sounded pretty interesting and I thought perhaps it wouldn't be a traditional "third in a row", I wanted to see it regardless just to figure out how the story ended but it would have been nice to have something just as scintillating as the first. The DVD came in from Netflix and, as per our usual, we prepared to watch it with dinner...but almost didn't when my significant other exclaimed "Holy crap, it's three hours long!". He works early each morning and wasn't so sure he wanted to stay up until ten, but for Pirates he conceded.
While the movie did seem a little too long (they probably could have made it an hour shorter without losing any of the story) the thing that disappointed me most were the character inconsistencies. Now I understand that characters will develop and change over time, but in this case there were some that changed radically for this film alone and it just didn't seem natural to me. Will takes his turn at the heartless backstabbing, Jack acts more victimized than anything else throughout the film, Davy Jones is battling with crippling depression and the memories of his old lover, and Elizabeth somehow makes a huge jump from governor's daughter-turned-reluctant pirate into a swashbuckling hard-mouthed buccaneer leader.
I'm still not clear on whether Jack's "insanity" as shown throughout the movie is a new development since his imprisonment in the Locker or if the writers are just trying to clarify a bit about his kooky personality...that is, if you ignore all the other images and voices Jack is speaking and acting much like he always does.
Despite the inconsistencies of character and the near-intolerable length of the film I can still say there was some great acting and they did a wonderful job of developing the atmosphere of the film and tying in some of the events to popular myth and lore. On the other hand, they seemed to have run out of ideas for some parts as a few scenes are nearly identical to scenes in the previous films...they worked good the first time so might as well try them again? Whatever the reason it did turn me off just a bit to this movie.
Overall this film is alright and a must if you've seen the other two Pirates of the Caribbean
films so you can see how the story ends, just try not to be too disappointed when it doesn't quite have the content the other two had. There's still plenty of semi-stunning swordplay and lots of Johnny Depp time so no worries there, and still good enough for me to bead to.

Awesome movie! Although I was a little leary of the running time (2hr 45mins), once the movie started the time just flew
