Tips for organizing yard and garage sales

When organizing a yard and garage sale the most important thing is to give yourself plenty of time to advertise, prepare, and reach as many folks as you can in advance of the date for the sale. Do not think you can have a successful sale when planned last minute. Much thought has gone into the best ones.

Garage and yard sales are a lot of work; do not fool yourself. Make sure you have the time and stamina for one or get lots of help. The best answer for you may to make it a multi family sale since then the work is shared and the sale is large enough to attract a lot of folks.Often the best date will be when your town has a citywide garge sale.

As to size of a sale, I have heard that if you have a hundred items for sale that is enough. In my opinion, you need much more. The more items the better. That being said, remember often everything does not sell and you need a plan to decide what to do with leftovers. Most folks take the leftovers to a charity store such as Goodwill or the Salvation Army. Some folks decide to keep some of it after all, but most times you want to be rid of it. Some charities will pick up all your leftovers. If the sale is multi family, make sure everyone lets you know beforehand what they want done with what is left.

But let's back up and start at the beginning of the planning. First decide where you will have it- garage, yard or both. Some folks set things up indoors also. You must choose how much room you need and your comfort level with folks walking through your property. Clean up the area before the sale. Be sure to cover or rope off items that are not included in the sale.

Next, decide who is going to provide things for sale. Ask neighbors, friends, or relatives to bring items they wish to sell. Develop a tagging system to accommodate everyone. You can use a number or name on all tags or a different color or type for each person.

Ask everyone that can to provide a table or something to sell from if they have it. You can use a door or boards on saw horses in addition to tables. You can use racks or wash line for clothing. You can use bookcases or other shelves for many items such as books, china, etc. Totes and tubs can be used for toys, stuffies, pans, Tupperware etc.

Set up everything as creatively and attractively as possible. It really does matter. Folks are drawn to pretty, unusual, variety, and plenty.

Decide how much clothing you want to sell, too much will sometimes turn people off unless you advertise that as your main item.

Whatever
