WHY DEFEND CHRISTIANITY? Why do we feel we have to? Has God asked us to!
In our defense of Christianity, aren't we really trying to vindicate our own personal beliefs? Aren't we attempting to justify our motives and rationalize our actions? If we're not careful, I fear, we begin to emulate the Pharisees and place as much significance on church tradition, rituals and teaching as to our interpretation of God's word. The Lord's strongest words of condemnation were for those who were religious and who in the practice of their faith were hypocrites and self righteous. Listen to His words...
"The teachers of religious law and the Pharisees are competent interpreters of God's Law. You won't go wrong in following their teachings. But be careful about following them. They talk a good line, but they don't live it. They don't take it into their hearts and live it out in their behavior. It's all just an entrapping like a thin veneer. They package it in bundles of rules, loading you down like pack animals. They seem to take pleasure in watching you stagger under these loads, and wouldn't think of lifting a finger to help. "
Matthew 23:2-4
From this passage Jesus clearly cautions us to be astute in our knowledge of God's word and forthright in our actions towards all who come seeking to know God and understand His ways. What we say will only impact people's lives and make an impression if our actions touch their present need. So in this case, what we say about what we believe isn't as important as what we do not say. Let us not be so quick to speak of doctrines or doctorates in front of those who are willing to listen to us, but, rather let us follow St. Paul's advice and take it to heart!
"Be wise and make use of every opportunity when amongst those who do not believe. Be pleasant with them and keep them interested by choosing your words carefully and being ready to give honest answers to anyone who asks questions about God and Jesus Christ." Colossians 4:6
God asks us to be patient and He admonishes us to listen and to: "Be still, and know that I am God," (Psalms 46:10). We are told that God speaks to us from His throne in heaven. God not only speaks to us, but, He will speak for us, if we let Him. Hear what God has promised us through his prophet Isaiah.
"I promise that My Word that goes out from My mouth will not return to Me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it." Isaiah 55:11
Promises have no power if we do not believe in them.
