rocky landscape of great literature by these characters. All elements of good fiction are important, but characters are what breathes life into a tale. They act and then react. They create movement, motitivation and reason to the story. They are the ripples on the surface of the plot and their decisions and actions alter everything else that takes place. Without rounded, often flawed characters, these three literary greats would be nothing more than a list of events and quite devoid of life.
