This is a very old debate, and most of the conventional arguments do have merit; however, there is one aspect that commonly gets overlooked.

First, lets try and define a "Bad Boy". While there are many characteristics that most bad boys share, I do not believe these are the defining characteristics of a bad boy.

A bad boy is a swaggering, cocky, alpha male, who treats women as there are trophies.

Substantial and conventional arguments:

Women (and men) want what they can't have. The "Bad Boy" is like a wild stallion, untamed and rapacious. A woman may see this as a challenge, or simply see this as a man that is unobtainable.

Dating a bad boy is full of drama, intrigue, and challenge, and is almost guaranteed to never be boring.

This next point may get me into some trouble. The cost of dating a bad boy is high, and the chance of actually landing one for your own is very low.

How is it that all these top designers of handbags, shoes, etc... can get away with charging exorbitant amounts of money for their products?

If something cost more, is harder to obtain, well, I have to have one. Same goes for bad boys.

Lets look at an unconventional approach, from a man's perspective.

Men like women. Men like women on a level that a women may never understand. A huge majority of men, who have the ability (wether through charm or looks) to have great sexual conquests, indulge in such. Therefore, a man who has the ability to be a "Bad Boy"-engaging in sexual conquests- does so.

That narrows the field of who our bad boys. They are men who are good looking and charming. What woman doesn't want a good looking, charming guy?

I have heard the term "good boy with bad boy looks". Those guys are out there, but few and far in between, for the reasons stated above.

So in conclusion:

Women are naturally attracted to good looking, charming, take charge men, and those men are often, by default, "Bad Boys".
