This is a recipe for an easy and delicious snack or appetizer that your whole family will love, including the kids. They can even help in the preparation!
HAM & SWISS ROLL-UPS
Here's what you need:
Sliced ham, about 1/8" to 1/4" thick
Sliced Swiss cheese, thinly sliced.
Crushed pineapple, drained
Brown sugar
Toothpicks
Here's what you do:
Lay a slice of ham out flat. I think the thinner the ham is, the better it rolls up. Put a slice of Swiss cheese on top of the ham. If you are using a different type of cheese, you can cut it into sticks about the size of string cheese.
Then add as much crushed pineapple on top of the cheese as you want, spreading it evenly across the surface. I suggest enough to make a "filling" out of it. Usually a thin layer is sufficient. And if using a stick of cheese, place the pineapple on the ham first. Leave on small edge of ham uncovered.
Roll this creation up, leaving the ends open. A hint here is to start with the edge that is going to leave you with the uncovered edge of ham to close the roll up. Once this is done, secure the roll with toothpicks. Put them in a baking pan and sprinkle them with brown sugar.
Heat in a 350 oven until the cheese starts to melt and the brown sugar softens into almost a glaze, about 15 minutes. Times may be adjusted depending on the oven you are using. A toaster oven would work too if small amounts are desired.
That's it! They are done. Serve warm. ENJOY!
I use Black Forrest ham because it's my favorite. I buy this regularly from the deli at the local grocery store. I am able to have him slice as thick or thin as I want. You may like to make yours thicker.
Also my family doesn't completely like Swiss cheese so I have used Pepper Jack for some of them. This adds a little kick and is just as delicious as the ones made with Swiss. I have also tried them with mozzarella and provolone cheese. All of these variations have turned out delicious. I will say that they are very rich. I can only eat one or two but my boys finish them off every time! I serve a green salad and warm French bread with these for dinner. I'm going to make them again at Christmas time, served as appetizers, when my whole family will be here to enjoy them.
So quick, so easy, so delicious!
