The Gentle Touch of Mommy:
He's standing on the stage
Surrounded by other children.
His eyes plead, what am I doing here?
The music and singing starts;
The others are making motions to the words.
He clasps his arms over his chest
I don't want to do this.
His face reflects panic
And then hurt.
His hands cover his mouth
He controls his emotions and fights the tears;
Ever the little man
Eternity and its over;
He goes swiftly to daddy in the front row
He doesn't raise his eyes
Humiliation floods his body
He failed
Daddy whispers in his ear
Comforted now
The floodgates open
The tears cannot be stopped.
And then,
Mommy's gentle touch
She holds him close
Everything is all right now.

limbs shaking.
She's afraid to move
too afraid to run.
Afraid that he'll return
