Every night they discussed those plans and each day, they put their plans into action. Hidey told the others how good he was at hiding. Glove decided they could make it harder and harder for M'gee to do any gardening. Clippy wanted to teach M'gee a lesson too, so they all worked on their hiding techniques.
M'gee started thinking she was losing her marbles. She thought she knew where she had left the tools but they were never there. Glove was off hiding under mulch or behind a bucket. Clippy had fallen under the chair, or was under Glove in some obscure corner of the Garden. But it was Hidey Hoe who showed the most amazing ability to disappear. He could melt into any background with his green and brown-scarred surface. Just a bit of cover to break up his simple shape and he disappeared right in front of your eyes.
Hidey couldn't move on his own though and that is where Glove showed his genius. He had four fingers and a thumb and could crawl around at night like some creepy insect. He dragged Hidey Hoe to all sorts of different locations where Hidey could then use his camouflage to disappear. Sometimes Clippy helped too, standing up and walking on the ends of her handles and pushing Hidey with the points of her shears.
But Clippy began to have doubts about driving M'gee mad. Glove was driven by vengeance and wouldn't have minded if M'gee had thrown herself off a cliff in despair at losing her mind but Hidey didn't want it to go that far either. For him it was just a big joke. Clippy thought more deeply than they did. "M'gee is careless but she means well" Clippy argued. "I think we should stop before something bad happens. If M'gee stopped coming to the Garden, we would be left outside forever! We just want to teach her a lesson, not kill her!"
Hidey agreed, but Glove just went into a snit and sat there brooding. So Clippy went looking for Elen. When she found the little fairy, she explained the situation. "Hidey Hoe, Glove and I have been hiding from M'gee and it's driving her crazy. I'm afraid something bad will happen if we keep going, but we really do need to change M'gee's ways. She should take better care of us! What should we do, Elen?" Clippy Shears wailed.
Elen was surprised. She didn't think that bringing the tools to life would have any bad effects. She just thought they would work harder. Ha! You can't predict what creatures will act like once they are alive. Elen could see the tools' problem: now that they were alive, they didn't want to die so they
