An exchange might work much better than simply borrowing; but it also has some challenges attached. You'll need to locate an exchange service or locate another student interested in the book you have to offer using flyers or emails or other sources. When you have located this individual you'll have to figure out just how to make the exchange. Of course, if your fellow student attends the same college or university then your exchange will be relatively easy; but if you've set up the exchange on your own and the student attends another school you'll have to figure out how to get the text to them safely. In many cases the extra hassle may be worth it when compared to the price of buying a brand new text.
If you're, possessive about your books and like to make notes in the text itself then the best solution to try without having to get a brand new book and break the bank would be to purchase used textbooks. The idea of getting a used text book has really grown along with the seemingly upward trend in the price of college class supplies. A used book may lack the new textbook smell but having your own copy can save you the hassle of having to make notes in the library or some other location that might inconvenient. Also, since you have the book in hand you can refer to it whenever you need to saving time on the amount of notes you need to copy. Finding a used book at the fraction of the cost of a new text is a great way to keep your budget small and it's much more convenient than some other solutions to the high price of purchasing the newest book.
