Poetry: Hating other people

by Shirley Love

Created on: April 04, 2009

They hated the sun with its blistering ray,
and hated the cold when the sun went away.

They hated the rain when it would not stop,
and hated the drought when it ruined their crop.

They hated daytime with its blinding light,
when it was darkened they hated the night.

They hated their neighbor with his different skin,
but when he moved out and another moved in,

They hated him more 'cause his faith was not theirs.
They hated his customs and his different prayers.

All those who did not share their point of view
were hated, and threatened, and harassed too.

They hated so much and they hated so long
without realizing their hatred was wrong.

Until the day they were left all alone
and found not one friend among all they had known.

They'd burned all their bridges and sealed their fate,
and their only companion was their old buddy "Hate."
