Poetry: A shoulder to cry on

by Marilyn Knowles Wilke

Created on: April 03, 2009

A person living on the streets, his job gone after years,
trying hard to survive, through all the trials and tears.
Someone reaches out to him, a shoulder to cry on now,
a helpful hand of mercy, in prayer, on his knees he bow.

A woman lost a child, crying by herself in agony,
feeling lost and alone with no family to see.
A stranger passing by, sat down and pulled her close,

a shoulder to cry on, now compassion this woman knows.

A child abused and battered, crying even now for his mother,
afraid and awaiting decisions to be placed with another.
A kind woman holds him, tenderly, reassuring him of his fate,
a shoulder to cry on helps to soothe him during his wait.

A man sitting, quietly, his wife in a coma awaiting her end,
with no one to call in his family, not even a close friend.
A passerby slips in the room, placing her hand upon his shoulder,
comfort from a stranger, one who was a little older.

A shoulder to cry on sometimes seems so far away,
but there are still compassion people even in this day.
So much sorrow and sadness in this broken world we live,
a shoulder to cry on is something anyone can give.

People demand money and expect so much in this life,
sometimes ignoring someone's pain and strife.
Many pass the homeless by and shake their head,
never considering what the Bible has said.

You may entertain angels and be unaware,
so be careful who you judge and start showing that you care.
For if you entertain an angel and pass them by so coldly,
your turn may come and be rejected so boldly.

A shoulder to cry on is so little to offer of yourself,
so stop putting other people's feelings upon your judgment shelf.
Though it may seem that a person is telling a sad lie,
God says we are to love one another and be willing to die.

So many sad cases living in broken homes and on the street,
a shoulder to cry on or a kind word when you meet;
will not break you or take anything from your pocket,
having compassion is your duty, on this you can stock it.

A shoulder to cry on, is that really so hard to share,
or is your life so busy that you forgot how to care.
Remember the burden that Jesus took from us and died,
and rose from the grave and that is why we all survived.

Burdens are lifted at Calvary, on His shoulders he took our sin,
and forgave us for our transgressions if we ask him to come in.
The sacrifices he made were far greater than anything,
so give a shoulder to cry on and your compassion, you bring.

A shoulder to cry on for a child, man or woman, too,
a homeless family or anyone who comes to you.
Remember to never judge or tear a stranger down,
for you never know when your own time may come around.
