Holiday centerpieces that last from Thanksgiving to Christmas

You can make your holiday decorations go the extra mile by arranging an eye-catching table centerpiece that works just as well for Thanksgiving as it does for Christmas, Hanukkah, or Kwanzaa. Such a seasonal chameleon is gentle on your budget and leaves you free to splurge on all the other decor throughout your house.

One such centerpiece that's sure to look great in your home is an arrangement based around metallic leaf ornaments. These gold and sterling silver leaf ornaments help to bridge the gap between the autumn emphasis on nature with the more wintry color schemes of the later months. These lovely ornaments resemble fallen leaves, but the gold ones translate just as well into a winter holiday decor theme with warm, rich colors, and the silver ones with shades of icy blue and white.

You can surround these ornaments with pine cones and sprigs of evergreen branches to bring in more elements of nature that work for Thanksgiving as well as the winter holidays. With these neutral elements as the basis of your centerpiece, you can add more season-specific touches around it for variety. For example, in November you can line the arrangement with different types of squashes, and in December you can switch those out for sprigs of holly or fake "iced" or "frosted" fruits.

Another great way to make a centerpiece for both fall and winter is to emphasize the rich colors of autumn leaves that can also translate into traditional winter holiday tones. For example, you can use an assortment of red, green, and golden yellow candles in the center of the table. If you focus more on these shades rather than bringing oranges and browns into the mix, then the candles could also double as a warm, cheery Christmas arrangement. You can place them on top of a red table runner for a bold, festive look that brightens up both Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner.

If you want to play up the shades of red in a different way, you can base your centerpiece around cranberries. These bright berries conjure up images of cranberry sauce at Thanksgiving dinner, and they also look cheery for the winter holidays as well. You can fill different shapes and sizes of glass bowls with cranberries to deck out your table for both fall and winter.

With a little creativity, you can set up a centerpiece that goes as great with a turkey as it does with a partridge in a pear tree.
