The paranormal: Do you believe in it

by Tamatha Hetrick

I myself am a firm believer in things that go bump in the night. As a child, we had strange things happen in our home. We were little and it never really affected us. However, that didn't prepare me for the unnerving string of events that happened a few years ago.

My family was moving back to my home state. So, my sister kindly invited us to stay with her family until we found a new home. They were living in an older farmhouse in south central Pennsylvania. From the dirt road that led to the house we should have seen the dark, gloominess inside the windows. However, we were too caught up in seeing family and starting our new journey in life to even notice.

The first few days were uneventful. By the end of the first week, we all seemed to not be sleeping very well. The house had a silence to it at night that was just so thick and loud, you couldn't hear yourself think. I started to keep a fan on to drown out the deafening silence at night. Once asleep, I would wake up for no reason to find the ceiling light on. I dismissed this as one of the kids turning it on. That didn't seem to make sense as they had no reason to come in my room unless to wake us, which they weren't doing. I started noticing that when I would wake up in the morning, the fan would be off. I knew I wasn't turning it off. My husband confirmed he did not turn it off. I asked my sister and again neither she nor her husband had turned it off. Strange.

As the sleepless nights continued, my husband and I started arguing more and more. This was not something we did in private let alone in the home of family. My sons were complaining of hearing noises in their room. One night, not long after this I woke up to hear my niece playing with toys in her room. It was after midnight. I had to use the restroom so I peeked my head in to tell her to go back to sleep. Imagine my surprise when she was sound asleep.

That next day, I decided to talk to my sister. She confirmed that she too occasionally heard the toys. She also always keeps her television on all night long. Apparently, a few nights before this she couldn't get to sleep because my kids were running up and down the steps. When she finally got up to talk to them, no one was awake but her and no one was on the steps.

We asked my sisters little girl if she ever heard her toys making noise at night. She was only 4 or 5. Not only did she hear them she knew who was playing with them. Lily and Pattie were playing with them. These were the little girls who lived
