Memoirs: Being a Cub Scout Den Leader

by Blaire Daniels

Created on: April 02, 2009

I have a great memory of Being a Cub Scout Den Leader that has stayed with me through the years and want to share my experience. My son wanted to be a Cut Scout and we supported him and went to their first meeting.

When I became a Cub Scout Den Leader I was looking for a job. But they needed a Den Leader so I decided to volunteer for the position. I had another mother who volunteered to help, she was not working but said she didn't want to be a Den Leader..

I got my son and his troop organized with the help of my mother's helper and a Scout earning his badges. We were a great team and the boys were great.

There was a lot to learn for everyone. And it was exciting to see their faces and how proud they were as they earned their badges.

Then I found a job, which was in another city. I told the children and their families about my going back to work, which they all understood could happen, and they asked me to finish working with the troop. So I decided to go for it. I would organize what we had to do the day before the meeting. It all went well but I was exhausted. Our meetings were once a week with lots of projects going on.

We made kites as a project and used paper bags and whatever the kids could come up with. We met on a Saturday when the project was finished and let the kites fly. We had some good laughs. Some kids made them too heavy and they couldn't get them off of the ground and some were flying really good. It was their project and they learned what to do better next time.

We had the Match Car Derby were the boys had to make their own cars. They were very creative. They didn't earn any ribbons but they had fun with the project. It was an all day outing and they were exhausted at the end of the day.

Then there was the Jamboree. The boys came came up with a good idea of making a volcano and a small town around it. We used dry ice for the volcano and they made the homes from different sizes of milk cartons and boxes. They used Easter Grass for green lawns. This was all their ideas and we worked to get all of the material together. The day of the Jamboree came and the boys were so excited about getting their project set up. It was another all day outing. The judges came by and the boys were all nervous. We had to wait until the end of the day for the announcement of who won First, Second and Third Place. Then the announcement was made and the boys came in Second Place. They were filled with excitement to know what they had accomplished. Their parents were really
