The Peacock plant is a perennial plant that originates from South America. It is at its best when grown inside the home or in a greenhouse setting. This plant does not flower but is so unique in color that it is a must have for anyone that loves to grow indoor plants. It doesn't require a lot of extra care and is best served in temperatures that range from 60-85 degrees Fahrenheit. It also needs a high amount of humidity.
Here are some tips to bring out the best in your Peacock plant:
Light
This plant loves indirect sunlight. When the light comes from the North, East or West, the plant will grow at its optimum.
Soil
You will want to use a rich potting soil that drains well but also retains enough water for your plants survival. An African Violet mix is perfect for this use. You can mix your own soil by using 1 part garden soil, 1 part coarse sand or perlite, and 3 parts peat. Keep in mind that you should always use a pot that has a hole in the bottom to allow excess water to drain off.
Water
It is very important that you use warm water for this plant. Keeping the soil moist throughout will help the plant grow to its best possible maximum.
Feeding
You should feed this plant about every two weeks from the Spring to Fall months. Always use a water soluble fertilizer. You should mix the fertilizer with and equal amount of water. If you prefer to feed the plant only once a year, you may do so by purchasing a granular slow release fertilizer. These are available in any home and garden store. If using this method, you should apply it once in early Spring.
Pests
This plant is known to get several different types of pest. Mealy bugs, aphids, scale and spider mites are attracted to it. You should always check the plant before you purchase it to make sure you don't bring these types of pest home to your other house plants.
Growing More Plants
You can divide these plants if you would like to add more to your home. This should be done in the Spring months.
Other Tips
A nice breeze is good for us but it isn't so great for your Peacock plant. Keep the plant away from drafty areas of your home. You should give the plant a mist of warm water often. You may put pebbles or gravel around the drainage dish to hold excess water in and increase the humidity for this plant. Make sure that the pot sits on top of the gravel so that it doesn't sit directly in the water.
This is a beautiful plant that you will enjoy for a very long time. As with all plants, it requires good care. Enjoy your new found treasure.
