The reality of working from home.
Many people dream of working from home. It certainly has its appeal when you think in terms of rolling out of bed when you want to, setting your own schedule, not having to answer to a boss and doing exactly what you want. The reality of working from home is not nearly as idyllic as those dreams, but the reality of working from home can be a very good thing with proper preparation and with careful consideration if it is the right decision for you.
Here are some things to consider when you are deciding whether to work from home:
1. Are you a self-starter? If you are not, you may not want to work from home. The reality of working from home is there is no boss there to make you work, so unless you have the motivation to give yourself assignments and to carry them out, the reality of working from home might not be right for you.
2. Would you tend to get caught up on what needs to be done at home rather than attending to business matters? When you work from home, you need to think of the home as an office. It's all well and good to wash the kitchen floor or watch a TV show, but it's important to make a distinction between work time and home time. If you have trouble with distractions, working from home might not be best for you.
3. Are you good at working by yourself? In an office, you have other workers to chat with and who will become your friends. Are you comfortable working by yourself, without the socialization with others? If not, the reality of working from home might not be for you. Working from home can be a lonely business for some. You need to assess honestly how much the camaraderie of seeing your co-workers means to you before you choose to isolate yourself in an office at home.
4. Are you comfortable with the finances of a business and with marketing tasks? In addition to whatever product or service you are offering when working from home, you will also have to run the business, be sure the accounting is correct, do the marketing to get new clients or customers, order materials and supplies, and ensure that the books are in order at all times. If you are not comfortable with these aspects of working from home, the reality of a home business might not be for you.
To some, the reality of working from home is a dream come true. To others, it could turn into a nightmare if you don't think of it realistically. Envision the best of it and the worst of it and make an informed decision regarding whether working from home is for you.
