Poetry: Being overwhelmed

What Is This?

What is this that conquers me
demanding I wear chains?
Winners lose and losers win,
in a moment, all does change.

Let me stand on solid ground,
firm place to keep my feet.
Not on sand where emotions shift
and tides drag me out to sea.

What is this that does insist,
I bow to circumstance?
It knocks me down in record time,
to live by whims of chance.

Give me strength from deep within,
when all else fails me so.
Hold my breath when fires threaten,
and laugh through trials I know.

What is this before my path,
that pulls me to the side?
To bludgeon me with inner doubts,
that tear me up inside?

Give me peace, forsake despair,
and learn to persevere.
Be mindful of clear moments,
for consistency through the years.

What is this but a moment missed,
to look beyond myself.
Too busy waging war with me,
while living so overwhelmed.
