Not original, perhaps, and certainly I'm not alone in my preference, but U2 is my all-time favorite musical group.
Yes, U2. Yes, Bono is slightly ubiquitous and preachy these days, and yes, their last album was barely worth the money, but hey-it's STILL U2! The band who created The Joshua Tree, War, The Unforgettable Fire, Achtung Baby!; the four lads from Dublin who, thirty-odd years later, are still as relevant as they were when they first burst into music in 1981.
U2. The biggest band in the world. Say what you will about Bono's brand of politics, but when he croons the 'aaaah's on "With or Without You", and riffs the War gem "Seconds", he can't be beat. The Edge's twinkly guitar lines are classic now, and who can deny the charm of Adam Clayton's refusal to look at the audience, or the utter cuteness of drummer Larry Mullen, Jr? U2 are long-lived for a reason: their music appeals to just about everyone. It can be political or it can be personal; it can echo with bombast or whisper its seductions; it's made by rock stars, but somehow manages to seem homegrown. It's U2.
