Debate on the war in Iraq

by American Citizen

Created on: April 01, 2009

The United States at war. Technically, this is an inaccurate statement because the US Congress has not made a Constitutional declaration of war since WWII. Slippery creatures those Congressional folk, are they not? Even though our military activities look like war, smell like war, kill like war and die like war - we are not at war. This is Orwellian "duckspeak" at its worst.

We are witnessing the global stage being dressed for "Dr. Strangelove: Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb", "1984", "Fahrenheit 451", "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows", "The Matrix" and "The Wizard of Oz" all wrapped into one bizarre plot. We are disoriented, diverted, distracted. And yet, many of us refuse to deny the truth of what we are seeing. We are at war. Not technically, but in actual fact, we are at war. To hell with the slippery language of Capitol Hill and 1600.

So why did we invade Iraq? The line we were fed was because there was a direct link between Saddam Hussein and the WTC/ Pentagon attacks of 9/11/01. "The evildoers hate our freedom". Even though I'd been as duped as most to believe that, I was outraged that we invaded Baghdad when we did. Saddam could wait. The person we were supposed to catch FIRST was Osama bin-Laden. Watching the "shock and awe" airstrike certainly shocked and awed me. I said to a co-worker, "That's too much power to exist in human hands." He said, "I'm just glad they're on our side."

That gave me no comfort. None at all. It's fairly common knowledge that when the US armed forces outdo last year's weaponry, the "obsolete" stuff goes on the black market and the Army/Navy Surplus Stores. One day, those Bunker Busters will be so last year. Something worse will be the "new black". What with the nearly open-ended powers Bush left for Obama, martial law could be declared in more states than just Alabama. At least the US Army is investigating that. Even so, I am not delusional enough to think that every last soldier in the armed forces will protect and defend the US Constitution when his commanding officer orders him to fire into a crowd of American civilians. Nope. Not that delusional at all.

So then why did we invade Iraq? Saddam had no connection to the attacks on 9/11/01. I hate to sound so jaded, but I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out that Osama bin-Laden had nothing to do with them either. Iraq has no WMD. We can't even clear out the corruption from our own elections, so it's not to bring democracy to the Iraqi people. If that
