Poetry: Don't leave me now

Friday
The dam burst on Friday

The boss at the yard

Had been working dad hard

Till the dam burst on Friday
"Slow down! No more overtime!"

With six of us kids and a mongrel stray

That wasn't going to happen

So the dam burst on Friday
And the boss at the yard

Had been working dad hard

Till the dam burst on Friday
I was in Geography

Learning how water was kept at bay

"Office now!" Mr Higgins said

And in the arms of a leather chair

Coffee smell filling the stagnant air

I learned about my loss
I'll never forget how dams work

How they hold in place the torrents

Mighty, powerful, strong

But over the years, cracks can appear

And the boss at the year

Had been working dad hard

And the sweat on dad's back

Obscured the slowly growing crack

And the dam burst on Friday
The torrents flowed free and fast

Destroying all in their path

Over many years

They flowed in my tears

Because the mighty dam:

The heart of a good man

That held them a bay

Suddenly burst on that Friday
