Guidelines for presenting yourself professionally on Helium

We tend to judge professionalism in writers by their published works, their credentials, how well their works are publicly received (translated into "number of sales" or "page views"), and the number of publications they have. We are also influenced by what their peers and critics think of them.

Helium has created a writing platform where writers can publish their works, create a reputation for themselves (number of page views), gain recognition as a writer (bylines, # of stars, and earned badges), and earn credentials (blue stars) based on peer reviews. Writers can see how well the public receives them by the amount of money each article earns, and they can see how their peers judge each article, based on its rank. They can also request direct feedback from peers.

Helium is an instant publishing house for writers "where knowledge rules." It has over 850,000 writings in its article directory, and it draws over three million readers per month.

New and experienced writers are welcome to write for Helium. All writers should study Helium's quality magazine-format before submitting material to it.

How do you present yourself as a serious writer?

1. Advertise yourself in your autobiography. Your "About Me" page should emphasize your writing experience, credentials, publications, and upcoming works. Brag yourself up, legitimately; no misrepresentation allowed.

Include links to your other online works: blogs, articles, and websites.

List your geographic location for "roving publishers" looking for local content writers.

Highlight your featured article and create a list of "favorites," including your own. Are you available for hire? Promote yourself here, but do not mention your name or business within your articles. That kind of self-promotion is not allowed: That would negate the "anonymity" rule of articles going through ratings.

Most readers are curious to know more about the writer of a well-written article. Publishers, editors, and other media representatives are constantly scouting for good works, and they want a "feel" for the person who wrote them.

2. Your byline will appear next to every article you publish. Many magazine and newspaper writers use their real names, with pride. If you want a bit of anonymity on the Internet, at least use a real-sounding name. "I'm-in-hiding" doesn't sound professional.

3. Your photo. Make a good first impression. People "connect" to other people through their eyes, overall appearance, and body language. Appear confident and professional.
