Weight loss: where and how to find motivation

If weight loss was easy there wouldn't be as many slimming products on the market offering a quick fix as there currently are. In the end there is no substitute for willpower when it comes to losing weight. You can spend as much money as you like on slimming pills, shakes, and bars, but if you don't have the ability to stick to a certain amount of calories each day over a period of time you probably won't notice a difference. It is therefore helpful to find ways of controlling your eating habits, rather than turning to food when times are stressful.

When you finally pluck up the courage to stand on the scales it can be rather disheartening to see a higher number than you expected, and it can be difficult to face up to how much weight you ultimately have to lose. It can therefore help to break up your target weight loss goals, making the task seem more achievable and keeping you focused.

Indeed, when trying to lose weight it helps to remain positive. You should treat yourself when you achieve your goals, perhaps with a new item of clothing, and you shouldn't berate yourself if you slip up occasionally, because then the temptation will be there to turn to food.

Although weight loss relies on you as an individual finding the willpower to stick to a diet and exercise plan, it can help to find support from others in the same situation as you by joining a slimming group. It is even better to have the support of your family, and for everyone to adopt healthier eating habits, as you will be less inclined to cheat'.

Motivation can also come from keeping a photo diary to enable you to track your progress, and by visualising how you want the new you to be. It is also a good idea to measure yourself when you start losing weight as the scales do not always reflect the number of inches you have lost.

Losing weight successfully generally means embracing a new mindset and approach to food, eating and exercise. In the long term this means that you can't deprive yourself of the foods which are your weakness, such as chocolate or ice cream. You therefore need to find a way to incorporate such items into your diet without overindulging. A little bit of what you love is no bad thing, particularly if it helps keep you going towards your overall weight loss goal.

The main thing when losing weight is to have patience, and to not be discouraged by slow progress. Humans are not designed to lose weight quickly, and so you should be realistic about how much you can actually lose in a week, month, or year. This can be especially difficult if you have a vast amount of weight to lose, but in the end if you really want it badly enough you can achieve it.
