Well, we got here somehow, didn't we? Till a few hundred years back when we did not have sufficient knowledge about space and the Universe, the only answer (to the title question) that we could figure out was that we are created by some supreme force, that controls everything. We called this force as 'GOD'. Till today, we don't have explanations to the title question, and hence we still believe in God. At least I do. And I guess, until human race finds such answers, we will continue with our belief and faith in God.
Now, let us consider the other side of the coin. For argument sake, let us assume that Universe was created by the Big Bang. Well, how did the Big Bang happen in the first place? There are a lot of theoretical answers, but only probable ones. There is no definite explanation yet. Hence my type of people will certify that God did the Big Bang, so that there could be life.
So, now let us try and analyse the concept of God a little bit. Let us take the case of our solar system, where it seems quite likely that only our planet has life, and other planets are lifeless. So, the success % is about 10% - even God is not perfect !
So, who or what is God? Why did he create the Universe? What was the harm in continuing with the situation, before creation of the universe (or the Big Bang)? Why did he want to create life? Why create us at all? What purpose do we serve for the Universe? Are we a result of a successful experiment by God, or a by-product of a failed one? Why are we in this design or form, not some other? Why is the need for other life forms to co-exist with us? Why all life forms are created on one planet only, and leave other planets idle? Why is our size so negligible in the context of the whole Universe? Why has God given us good enough brains to figure out these questions, but not good enough brains to be able to find out the answers? Exactly, what is it that God wants to do, by creating the Universe, and what role, if any, is there for us to play in that?
Probably God is some super programmer, who got bored of being alone, and needed some toys and gadgets for entertainment. So he did the Big Bang and created the Universe. As time progressed, he wanted more advanced and different self programmed toys. So he created life. But he also takes care of us, so he programmed us in such a way that different life forms can co-exist together. The life forms which cannot co-exist, are probably created in far flung galaxies, where they cannot meet up, and start a space war. Its also amazing to note that everything in the Universe ends with the passage of time. I can't understand why does God need to end something which he created for his entertainment - maybe he gets bored with the old stuff, and makes everything extinct in a phased manner, or are we (and other life forms as well) programmed to self destruct over a period of time? But why?
All these are seemingly crazy questions, but are they relevant or not? Probably we will not get the answers in our lifetime, but it would be an interesting exercise to put ourselves in God's shoes and try to search for answers to these questions. You never know, you may land up getting some positive direction in life. I guess this is how God helps us, and therefore I believe in God and have full faith in him.
