For the life of me, I do not see, in this day and age, why we can not open our minds to change. Everybody preaches to love one another, yet when you find that one person who goes against the societal norm, you find it easy to not love them. Homosexual men and women are being deprived of the right to complete happiness by the closed-mindedness of society today. What if the roles were reversed. What if being heterosexual was against the "societal norm" and you were denied your right to be married. More than half of this world would suddenly find themselves not being able to call their partner their husband or wife. Think about how unfair that would be. Suddenly, many people would find themselves without insurance. Individuals in the hospital on their deathbed would be denied the right of being with their lover as they breathe their last breath. Some couples may find their children being taken away from them. Being a lesbian I speak for many others when I say it depresses me and rips me apart inside knowing that if I want to marry my partner, I would have to move to a select few states or move out of the country. This nation values itself on equality and on the pursuit of happiness, yet we continue to deny individuals the rights to happiness and equality. Many heterosexual couples do not marry for love these day, especially military couples. They instead do it for insurance purposes and to make a little extra money. Does this really fall into what we define as the proper "sanctity of marriage"? We have so many gay and lesbian couples out there who are truly in love with one another and want to build lives together as one but can not legally declare themselves married. Look at Portia de Rossi and Ellen Degeneres, a very happy lesbian couple. When California legalized gay marriage, they were finally able to make a complete commitment to each other resulting in complete happiness. Then, not even a year later, their right to be married was taken away from them crushing them completely. So, in this matter, I think that homosexuals should receive all the right and benefits of marriage. It is time for the "modern day society" to get with the program and start making some drastic changes and uphold their theory of equality for all. It is not going to change anything in this country other than the fact that everybody is given all of the same right and can live free of discrimination.
