I live in a boring world. I work in cubicle land, far away from the dreams that I had when I was a kid. I wanted to be an NBA basketball star. However, my height and my skills never progressed in real life. However, I was the best at NBA JAM, a game that I play to this day. What has it garnered me? Nothing really, but I love to play video games. I've been playing video games for nearly twenty years now. It is a harmless escape to me, but it can also become a distraction too.
When I was young my imagination went insane. It was an incredible thing, I would play video games and try to be the video game in everything I did. If I played Megaman, well then I was going to be Megaman all the time. I would get a blue towel and go around thinking I could defeat the villainous robotic uprisings that would be carried by my imagination. Then I grew up, and thing got more complicated.
I work in a job I hate. I do this for forty hours a week. I then go home to my wife and we sit around and nothing crazy happens. But then I get to play video games and all things melt away. Video games provide an escape for me from the mundane world that I am trapped in. I don't have to answer to an idiot boss, I don't have to be confined to my cubicle, I can just be in my little wonderful video game world.
Some people turn to drugs, some people turn to alcohol, I turn to video games a lot more. It allows me to enjoy the greatness that is my childhood in a safe environment, and the only thing that matters is me and my enjoyment of the game. You can't really say that about a lot of things out there right now. There are so many things that you can not do in this world, but in the video game world, the possibilities are endless. You can truly be someone in video games, and while that might be pathetic to some, it is an enjoyment that I can not and do not get from my desk job at the cubicle, wasting away my college education.
Video games have provided me years of enjoyment and still do. They are an entertainment choice that is truly wonderful and gets better with age. I don't know why people think it is childish; childish things shouldn't be put away, they should be cherished and given to your kids, and my kids will enjoy video games with their dad. Isn't that what it is all about? Keeping things for the kids, and sharing your experiences with them. I hated that my parents didn't play video games or did anything with me, so I'm going to see if the kids like what I do enough to enjoy it themselves, and video games do just that.
