Poetry: Survival

by Brittany Welch

You can't stop the pain
That rips at my heart
All you can do is sit
And watch it tear me apart

You watch as I scream out
Into this dark, cold night
Watching as I struggle
To slowly win this fight

You brush back the hair
That covers my eyes
Watching them scream out
Through my muted cries

I take hold of your hand
But you're silent as a mouse
Comforting me through this battle
This battle of self

Don't let me go
And slip silently away
Hold strong to my hand
So I know that it's all okay

With you by my side
I am not afraid
To go off on this long
And scary escapade
