idea of lighting up Christmas trees using electric lights. It didn't take too long for this to catch on; by the early 1900s thousands of people began decorating their outside and inside trees with electric lighting. Over the years, we have taken the idea of just one or two decorated trees to elaborate schemes of whole neighborhoods being lit up for Christmas. Just take a drive in the weeks preceding Christmas and we'll see hundreds of merrily decorated houses, yards, and businesses.
So a Christmas tree might have a religious origin. But we, as Christians, must be careful not to begin to worship the tree. We are admonished in Jeremiah 10:1-5 that the misuse of such items creates a false adoration, which could easily lead us down an evil path. If a year comes along and we have to make a choice between buying a tree or feeding our family, we better make the right decision.
A Christian can use a tree to convey the message of Christmas. Two thousand years ago, Jesus Christ was born and laid in a manger. Perhaps that manger was made from a tree. Thirty-three years later, Jesus Christ was crucified on a tree and laid to rest. Three days later He rose from the dead, defeating the enemy of death once and for all. Like the evergreen tree that never fades, neither does the message of Christ ever fade. Like the evergreen tree that forms a neverending triangle, so is the unending message of the Trinity.
For me, I like to think of the tree in a Christian sense, as opposed to "religious." In our house, our decorations are simple and we strive to make the message of Christ foremost in our lives, not just at Christmas.
If we truly call the decorated tree a "Christmas Tree," we must remember that without Christ, there is no Christmas.
