There is a large misconception that electric dog collars excessively shock dogs and should not be used in training. This is untrue. Electric dog collars use a proper shock amount to just give the dog a little scare. In many cases these collars beep to warn the dog that they will be shocked. It doesn't just flat out shock them. I personally have two large breed dogs who have been trained, successfully, using electric collars, and it was in a completely humane way. I have actually tested these collars on myself to see exactly how much they were shocking. I would never use something on my pets that was going to cause them harm.

Finding a proper electric shock collar is as simple as going to a local pet store, and telling them your needs. There are all kinds of electric collars out there such as: bark prevention, and ones to keep you pet in your yard. When buying an electric shock collar take into consideration the area in which you need the collar to work. Also check with your veternarian to make sure your dog is healthy enough to wear an electric shock collars. Older dogs, or small dogs may not be able to handle wearing a shock collar. Many electric collars have at least a fifteen pound weight limit, before the dog is able to wear the collar. The collars are not designed to harm the animal, but to simply give them a little shock, to prevent the behavior in which they are doing.

When using electric shock collars to train a dog you must know how to use the collars. There are settings on each type of electric shock collars that is specific for the size of the dog. In almost all cases these collars are tested to obtain the best "shock" out put for your dogs specific size. A person must also take into consideration the area in which they are using the electric shock collars, that there are no interferences that could cause the collars to continually shock the animal. Some cell phone towers, or radio waves can effect the use of certain collars. Always make sure that the collar is not to tight on the animal, so the animal is not uncomfortable. This is true with any kind of collar a person may use on a dog, always make sure there is a proper fit. If people understand how to properly work the collars, and use them in a proper manner, electric collars are extremely effective.

Overall electric shock collars are a humane, and effective way to train dogs. It is a lot easier to train large breed dogs with electric collars. Should electric shock collars be used for training dogs? Yes they should. In no way is it inhumane. When training a dog it is the best way, to communicate exactly what is proper behavior.
