How to start a blog

Blogging has become one of the world's most popular activities. Anyone who has a computer and an opinion about something can start a blog, the key is maintaining the blog. Many bloggers start off fast but quickly fade as they realize they aren't making the millions of dollars they expected. Truth is, 99% of all bloggers do not make enough money to live off of, but it you really enjoy what you are writing about then blogging can provide a nice supplemental income.

The first step when it comes to starting a blog is deciding what you are going to write about. Popular topics include celebrity gossip, sports, website and product reviews, and movie reviews, but you can write about anything as long as it interests you. The most important thing is to write about something you have an opinion about and something you are knowledgeable about. This will give you more credibility in the blogging community and help make your blog more successful. Also remember to write about a topic that interests you, this way you won't get bored quickly and give up.

Next you must decide which blog hosting site you would like to use. Some of the most popular ones are blogger.com and wordpress.com. Both of these sites are very user friendly and make setting up a blog easy. I favor blogger because it allows users to easily setup Google Adsense so users can begin generating revenue right away. Picking a template that best fits your blog's topic and your blog's tone is also essential. If you blog is not appealing to the eye, then readers will go elsewhere.

Once you have decided one a blog topic and you have picked a blog hosting site and template, you are ready to begin writing content on your blog. Content is the single most important feature on any blog because that is what drives and creates a readership. Your blog must provide readers with worthwhile information that is updated frequently. Most bloggers start off quickly but then begin writing less and less before their blog eventually becomes stagnant. Keeping your blog's content fresh and unique is very important. Try to avoid using a lot of dated information as after a while it becomes antiquated and is no longer relevant. Writing about topics that can be useful for years to come and updating it when necessary is one of the best ways to go.

Lastly, no blog can be successful without readers. Most people think that once you create a site people will just show up and start reading it. Unfortunately, that is not the case. Bloggers need to register their site with Google so it can be crawled for information and then added to their search engine. It is also important for bloggers to add their blogs to blog directories like technorati and blog catalog so they can be recognized by fellow bloggers, which is the first step in developing a solid readership. You should also read other blogs that are about similar topics as yours and comment on the writer's content. Where appropriate you can even ask for a link exchange to generate more visitors to your site.

Developing a blog can be as easy or as difficult as you make it, it all depends on what you want to get out of your blog. If you are just looking for an outlet to vent your frustrations and not as a way to make money then starting a blog is very easy. However, if you want to monetize your blog you must spend a great deal of time learning about SEO (Search Engine Optimization), SEM (Search Engine Marketing), and link exchanges. It is also a good idea to participate in affiliate marketing programs and advertising as a way to generate revenue. This can take some time and can be very frustrating so make sure you have another source of income before to decide to quit your day job and become a professional blogger.
