Class Reunions: Torture or punishment

by Deborah Coshun

Created on: March 31, 2009

Were you that very shy girl in your class room? The girl or guy who was never popular and always on the outside looking in! If you ever wondered why a class reunion is important I can tell you because both of these definitions would apply to me as a young girl in high school. So read on and I'll tell you my reasons for enjoying a class reunion.

All of us remember the glory days of school and remember the popular crowd, the jocks, the dances, etc.. We remember how we reacted or didn't react to all of this. Now you're an adult and you realize what you're goals are in life and you know by the time 20 year class reunion rolls around whether you've met your goals or will meet them. You now have life going in the direction you want it to go. The kids from those years of high school have little meaning in the life you have developed for yourself.

You attend your 20 year class reunion and you see all those gorgeous guys and gals that were so popular back in high school and for the first time in your life you really know what your parents meant when they tried to tell you not to worry about these kids. At my reunion most of the jocks were now overweight and much shorter than I remembered them being in school. The guy with the gorgeous curly hair that was so popular is now bald and selling insurance. The ugliest guys in my class now seemed to be the most handsome. The gorgeous gals aged just like me (some a little worse and some a little better). In a nutshell, as adults it didn't really matter what we did in school but what seemed important was who we are now. Now if you turned into a junkie or did nothing with your life, a reunion could be intimidating! If you got a good job, became a successful mom/dad, enjoy life and are looking forward to what tomorrow brings, you will love the reunion. You will no longer look back and wish for something that never was there. You will meet all these prior icons of your school on equal footing and wonder what all the fuss was back in school and why did you think they were so special!

A reunion is just what it implies! It's a great way to go back and see old classmates and reminisce about days gone by. It's your chance to be with everyone and no longer feel on the outside. This is your opportunity be the great person you are and have a good time! I found that most of these kids were just as uncertain and shy as I was when they were in school but had the ability to handle it differently. It was a great opportunity to get meet everyone that for one reason or another I did not get to meet when in school.

We all grow up and move on and every now and then it's nice to just take a step back and take a look at those good old days! We go to a class reunion and have that moment in times of past and then go realizing how lucky we are today! So go, don't miss that class reunion!
