All I can do is speak from the heart on this one.

YES, YES, YES. The United States should definitely take greater action to intervene in the Darfur atrocity. This country has turned a blind eye to this issue for YEARS. However, the U.S. is quick to jump up and go over to Iraq to seek Weapons of Mass Destruction that most of the world knew never existed. American soldiers are being killed everyday over in Iraq, and for what? How sad is it that soldiers are losing their lives for a personal vendetta the Bush Administration had with Saddam Hussein. Yes, Saddam Hussein was a horrible dictator. I am certainly not making light of that. However, the country posed no real threat to the United States.

However, here is this deplorable situation, and this country has the nerve to be unsure of sending troops there? Why is that? People are being raped, beaten, and killed in Darfur on an hourly basis. This is a fact. We know; it's reported all over the world, etc. However, the U.S. is hesitant in its intervention. Yet, the U.S. can jump up and invade Iraq, killing thousands of civilians in the process, on the "assumption" of the presence of weapons of mass destruction and the mistreating of the Iraqi people. If the U.S. cares so much about the Iraqi's freedom, why isn't it concerned about the freedoms of the people of Darfur?

Perhaps it's because the Sudanese land has no incentives to offer, unlike the oil and contracting opportunities in Iraq (can we all say, "Halliburton")? Or, perhaps it is because the land of Sudan has A LOT to offer the U.S...as long as it is in turmoil, and needs weapons, or money-mongrels disguised as Good Samaritans can create charities off the backs of the people of Darfur and write off the fundraisers and expenses come tax time.

This subject makes me question the human conscience more and more. How can you sit around and NOT do anything? Sure, I've contributed to causes for Darfur, but I know that that is not enough. However, I do the best I can. The U.S., however, has had MORE than enough funds to assist with this. We can wire a billion dollars over to Phuket (one of the most elite areas in the world) immediately after the tsunami, but the U.S.' hands are tied with this? I can't buy that. Not that that area of the world did not need the aid, because it certainly did. However, to get that major area of tourism and resorts back in full swing was a priority mainly for the U.S., Australia and Europe. Lots of money was invested in Phuket over the years from all over the world, and a natural disaster was not about to tear rich people from their money. Darfur, on the other hand, cannot offer that.

Now that we have a new administration, I sincerely hope that the Obama Administration takes this matter seriously, and does everything in its power to help these people.
