Circles are used in many different patterns and styles. Knowing how to crochet a circle is very handy. Circles are required for many different designs including hats, purses, doilies, rugs, potholders, and much more.
There are many varieties of yarns you can use. For projects such as hats, a thicker yarn can be used, or for more delicate projects you can use thread.
There are several ways to crochet a circle. Here are two of those ways.
1: With single crochet.
To make a circle with single crochet, start out by chaining about 7. Join the 2 ends of the chain together with a slip stitch. Now chain 1. Work about 11 single crochets into the ring. Join with a slip stitch to first single crochet. For second round, chain 1, 2 single crochet in each single crochet around.
For round 3, chain 1, 2 single crochet in first sc, 1 single crochet in next single crochet, 2 single crochet in next single crochet, around.
For round 4, chain 1, 2 single crochet in first single crochet, 1 single crochet in each of next 2 single crochet, 2 single crochet in next single crochet, 1 single crochet in each of next 2 single crochet, around.
Continue to work in this pattern, putting a bigger space between your 2 single crochet cluster with each round.
2: With double crochet.
Chain 7, join two ends together with slip stitch to form ring. Ch 3. Counts as first double crochet. 20 more double crochet in ring. 21 double crochet altogether. Join with slip stitch to form ring. Round 2, ch 3, 1 double crochet in same stitch. 2 double crochet in each stitch around. Round 3, chain 3, 1 double crochet in same stitch, 1 double crochet in next stitch, 2 double crochet in next stitch, 1 double crochet in next stitch, 2 double crochet in next stitch, around. Round 4, chain 3, double crochet in same stitch, 1 double crochet in each of next 2 stitches, 2 double crochet in next stitch, 1 double crochet in each of next 2 stitches, 2 double crochet in next stitch, around.
Continue to work in this pattern, until your circle is big enough. Notice how in the second row, there are 2 double crochet, then 1 double crochet, then 2 double crochet, and in the 3rd row there are 2 double crochet and then 1 double crochet in next 2 stitches, and then in the 4rth row there is 2 double crochet, and then 1 double crochet in next 3 stitches. Notice how with each new row, there is a bigger space between the cluster of 2 double crochet. You will continue to put one more stitch between each cluster with each new row until you read the desired width.
