A foot scrub is a wonderful product which removes dead skin from the foot and imparts a healthy glow to the skin. When used regularly, foot scrubs can soften calluses, minimize the appearance of bunions, and keep feet looking and feeling their best. Many foot scrubs on the market are quite expensive, but it is surprisingly easy to make your own foot scrub at home.
The primary ingredient in a foot scrub is salt. Salts used for scrubs should be coarse grain rather than fine grain, such as the size of the crystals used in table salt. There are many different types of salts available, most of which can be found in specialty food stores or heath food stores. One of the most popular types of salt to use for making scrubs is sea salt, which is a coarse grain salt with an extremely high amount of minerals and trace elements.
Epsom salt is another popular choice because it is high in minerals, readily available, and very affordable. To create an amazing scrub which is high in minerals, combine one cup of sea salts with a cup of epsom salt. If the salt mixture is too coarse, it is a good idea to crush some of the larger crystals using a pestle. The ideal salt scrub should be coarse, but not so coarse that it will scratch the skin.
Once the salt mixture has been ground to the preferred coarseness, the next step is to add oil. Add one cup of a carrier oil to two cups of salt. A carrier oil is a lightly-scented or unscented oil that is used as a base. This allows the addition of essential oils and other fragrances which can be added in order to customize and personalize your scrub. Examples of carrier oils are sweet almond oil, grapeseed oil, flax seed oil, coconut oil, and jojoba oil. These oils can be found in most health food stores.
The final step is to customize your foot scrub by adding a few drops of essential oils, which will create a wonderful spa-like aromatherapy experience. Popular essential oils for foot scrubs are lavender, tangerine, tea tree, lemongrass, and peppermint. Each oil has the ability to soothe, energize, or invogorate. Peppermint oil, for example, is used for invigoration while lavender is often used for relaxation. The type of oil you choose will depend on your personal taste and preference.
Once the scrub is thoroughly mixed, it can be kept in a glass jar and stored in a cool, dry place where it can last for years. Some people prefer to several small batches instead of one large batch, so they can experiment with different scents and ingredients. No matter what scent you choose, making your own foot scrub is fun, easy, and an affordable way to create the spa experience at home.
