Credit cards can be a real life saver in times of emergency. If you break down along the road somewhere, you are able to pay for the repairs right away. Credit cards also allow you to randomly spend money without much thought to the consequences in the end. Credit card debt is a huge problem in the United States.
It is very easy to find yourself deep in debt and with no means to pay it properly. This can lead to financial troubles down the road. You should do everything in your power to keep your credit cards paid off. The most obvious reason is that you want your credit history to reflect nothing but good. If your credit history goes down the drain, so do many chances in life. Buying a house can become very difficult if you are late on your other payments.
Tips to help you save on your credit card debt:
Emergency Only
Only using credit cards in extreme emergencies can save you a lot of headaches when the mail comes. Emergencies such as flat tires or a medical emergency will allow you to get the help you need. Just be sure that when the bill comes in that you pay it in full where possible. This will save you years of aggravation.
Pay More than the Minimum
Paying the minimum on a credit card balance is often a game of cat and mouse. You are the cat trying to pay off the debt. The mouse is the debt that can grow even larger if you don't pay extra on it. If you just add the amount for the interests charges, you can keep from paying interest on your interest. This also keeps the bill from getting bigger or staying the same month after month.
Number of Cards
You should keep a minimum number of credit cards. This keeps you from being too tempted to pull out another card when one card is maxed out. This is the way in which many people end up with more debt than they can handle. You should keep only one or two major credit cards. Department store credit cards are really unnecessary and can rack up high interest rates.
Finance Charges
It is utterly important to insure that you pay your credit card bills on time. Do not wait for the grace period. If you do not pay the minimum balance in a timely manner, you will be hit with exorbitant fees. If you do not have a habit of being late and find yourself running late, you should call the company that holds your card to make arrangements. This can often get those fees removed. This only works if you have not been habitually late with your payments.
Switch it up
You will probably get many advertisements in the mail about taking a card with a different company than you currently do business with. These are often accompanied by offers to move your balances to that card and at a lower interest rate than your old card. This can be very beneficial. You want to read the fine print though. You don't want the new card to have a higher interest rate than the current card once the limited time is up on the introductory rate.
Saving on your credit card can save you years of worry. If you set up a few guidelines for yourself before you go into debt, you will be able to build a great credit report without fear of a bad credit report. Common sense and knowledge on how your cards work will help you stay clear of a bad outcome.
