Poetry: Taking a chance on love

by Jahala Jamison

Created on: March 30, 2009

I put my heart inside a cage and then I locked the door.

The key I hung it on a chain. To unlock the lock no more.

I've tried very hard to protect my heart from love and pain.

It was lonesome for awhile, but then it seemed to like it's life, locked up in it's cage.

I never let it get too close. It hasn't really tried.

But when it met you, well... now it only whines.

It tells me everyday and constantly to "Open up it's door!"

It tells me that it will love you, like you've never been loved before.

I tell my heart to "Hush Up! And be very still!"

"No Love! No Pain!" I tell it. "Not again to love in vain!"

It whispers to me while I sleep. "Your Name! Your Name!"

It keeps me turning all night long. It wants out of it's cage!

I turn the music up at night to drowned out it's voice.

It only gets louder. Ahh! You should hear the noise!

It jumps against the bars when the telephone rings.

And when its your voice it hears, it begins to sing!

It tries hard to reach the key. It lies in wait to startle me.

It's even tried to skip a beat!

If it could hold it's breath, I know from red to blue it'd be.

The tantrums that its throwing, because with you it longs to be.

I waited until it fell asleep, before we shared a kiss.

But somehow it felt the heat. Nothing has it missed!

I've tried everything to ignore the words it says to me.

It never hushes. It whispers to me constantly.

When I fill my life with loud and busy things,

It then only lifts it's voice...

It cries. It sings. It bangs against the bars! I don't know what to do!

If I open up it's cage... Up the street, around the bend.

Not gone! But just with you!

I sit here and contemplate.Staring at it's little face.

I've looked it over carefully. It's scars are just a trace.

Am I denying destiny? Or am I right to keep the key, hanging on its chain?

I feel myself reaching! My resolve begins to wain.

Oh well! What's another scar I guess.

Maybe love this time will be the best.

I turn the lock. It looks at me!

Smiling! Smiling! It's Free! It's Free!

I sit here wondering... What have I done to me?

Well, who knows? We'll just wait and see!

So here I sit, open cage and dangling key.
