Title: Out of the Fire
All that she wanted was someone to love her
It seemed fair to her and not too much to ask
With so much to give, though no halo above her
He said when they met he was up to the task.
Her infant dreams were so delicate, precious
To trust and find freedom by giving herself
Now redefined both by name and by purpose
She gave everything, put her dreams on the shelf.
He spoke with a strength and vulnerability
Feelings expressed let her view him within
He portrayed kindness and seeming humility
Traits she was sure could never leave him.
Their children just needed to be with their Daddy
She was content with the home where they lived
She never saw his eyes wander away from
The woman he pledged his devotion to give.
As waters receding from high on the shore
His love for her washed out to sea with the tide
She never believed he would give his love elsewhere
Nor witnessed his rage or his violent side.
Family and friends saw a beautiful painting
Whenever they opened their doors through the years
But she knew the truth and was patiently waiting
As he ruled with intimidation and fear.
He made her think that no other would want her
Her beauty eroded, to never return
Believing the lies as he cruelly would taunt her
Was a difficult lesson that she grew to learn.
They played their show daily for all who were near them
Few Broadway productions had shared such a run
Until she decided she wasn't an actress
And made up her mind, finally, it was done.
So she left him a note, took her kids and her keys
Left the house and her fears and embraced the unknown
A frail understanding of her capabilities
Needing a soil that would nourish their growth.
Fears that had handicapped now motivated
Family and friends saw this woman, now whole
With love and desire and dreams captivated
And finally love for herself, for her soul.

I thought of you today
For no apparent reason
Just a memory of your face
The quietest of images
A whisper of the place.
I thought
Breakup: An Explanation
What you are not, my dear, is a flame
that starts in my sternum and sends smoke
through my pores.
What
The files are sealed
The vaults are closed
I wait, new chapters to unfold
I've shed some tears
I've cried the past
But future's
