Cats are wonderful pets. They are generally independent, but do require a basic level of care, specifically feeding, watering, and changing the litter pan on a daily basis. Otherwise, they largely take care of themselves: the original self-cleaning pet!
Cats as Companions
Cats can be social or aloof. The level of shyness or friendliness of a particular cat is partially due to genetics (specifically the friendliness or shyness level of the father) and partially due to environment and socialization as a kitten. Having a cat in the house can make lonely people feel less lonely, or make empty-nesters feel like they have a new purpose in life. Cats have been shown to reduce their owner's blood pressure, and keep older people healthier than non-cat-owners. Cats are wonderful companions.
Medical Care
If you get a cat, you must be prepared to help keep it healthy. Your cat should receive a complete physical examination from a veterinarian every year. Additionally, your cat will require vaccines to prevent infectious diseases. Your veterinarian will do a risk assessment for your particular cat to decide which vaccines are appropriate.
Dental Care
Some cats eventually require dental cleaning and polishing or even extraction of one or more teeth in order to maintain proper oral health. It is helpful to start brushing your cat's teeth when he or she is a kitten in order to minimize the need for costly dental work later on.
Nail Care
Trimming your kitten's nails routinely with a small cat nail clipper is also a good habit to get into, and can prevent the destruction of furniture or carpets that some people complain of. Declawing your cat, however, is not a good idea. It is painful and disfiguring for the cat, and is outlawed in most civilized countries, the USA being a notable exception.
Feeding
Feeding your cat is simple; just offer a daily feeding of a high-quality cat food. Most veterinarians will agree that the most important part of feeding a cat is to offer a balanced diet. There are online services that can help you create a balanced home-cooked meal, if that is your desire. Otherwise, you can just purchase prepared canned or dry cat food at your favorite market or online vendor. Make sure to also provide plenty of fresh water!
Exercise
Cats, like people, benefit from regular exercise. Some people will obtain a harness and leash, and walk their cat outside! Some cats do not like to go for walks, but they can still exercise. Throw a ball or toy mouse for your cat to chase. Use a lecturer's laser pointer to make a dot on the floor or wall for the cat to pounce on. Your cat will be a great source of amusement for you and will get a great workout at the same time.
If you are a new cat owner, welcome to the world of cats! Together, you and your cat can enjoy a long and healthy life.
