looked emaciated. (Many men in the alehouse would spend all their money on "Sweet Water" and couldn't afford food.) His hair, dark with a reddish tint, was cut in between his ears and his chin. He was attractive and for the first time, Trista deeply desired a man perhaps it was the overwhelmingly loneliness that drove her to it, but she went home with him that night, wanting, more than anything, to feel safe in his thin arms. To feel the protection of his wisdom.
For as long as Faith could remember, there had always been a man to cause devastation in her life. She came from the more unpleasant and poorer side of South Malathia where her drunken father beat her mother to death and then drowned himself three weeks later. Working off her parent's debt since the age of six, she was worst than even a peasant
she was a servant in her last moment of debt. The demands of her male masters had only increased as she got older, ready to leave into awaiting freedom. After her experiences, she could never trust, love, or respect a man. They were pitiful creatures, even more pathetic to women, who gave into Malithia's social order. She frowned upon everyone and, feeling misanthropic, she wanted to leave, go far away, where no man could ever hurt her again.
Trista awoke the next morning feeling something new, something she had never felt before love.
