Many people will argue that the theory of evolution and belief in creationism cannot and should not mix, and the issue is still debated fiercely every day. However in actual fact with a little less bickering there is actually room for both ideas within one theory of how humans, and indeed all life came to be.
To begin with, there are actually different types of creationism, the primary being general creationism and so called intelligent design or young earth creationism. General creationism is not associated with any particular religion, and tends to focus on the fact that a god of some kind created the world or universe, although the rest of the details are left alone for the most part. Because so much of this kind of idea is left to interpretation, and that the actual actions and nature of the god figure aren't discussed, this theory fits in with evolution nicely.
Many people associate the creationist side of the argument with Christianity alone, although of course most religions have their own version of events. The difference with many groups is how literally their textual basis is taken. For example some people believe that the bible is true word for word, and is all entirely fact. Other people tend to believe that the messages that the bible is teaching are what should be focused on, and that the actual wording itself isn't either literally true or that important.
The increasingly popular Christian belief in young earth creationism on the other hand tends to believe that the bible is true word for word, and spends most of its time refuting proven science and making ridiculous and impossible claims. One such claim for example is that the world is only 5000 years old, and that the dinosaurs were killed as a result of not being allowed in Noah's ark. Completely ignoring the thousands of marine species, the fact that humans wouldn't have survived alongside dinosaurs and other glaringly obvious problems. People who profess to believe in this are either uneducated, or are simply refusing to admit that they are wrong, although it remains a popular position.
This stubbornness from either side to leave any facet of their argument open is why creationism and evolution will likely largely remain separate for the foreseeable future. For example many evolutionists tend to refuse to accept that any being that could be thought of as god could possibly exist, even without any relation to current religions. Creationists on the other hand refuse to accept that the bible could
