Not only should we keep the term limits but we should modify the ones we have. As it stands we are stuck for better or worse with the same president for 4 years. Never mind that we realize soon into their administration we made a mistake and elected the wrong person. We are human and we do make mistakes but when we elect a president we can not do anything about that mistake for 4 years. That is just to long to wait any issues that come up will only get bigger and worse during that time span. The way today's government is handling the stimulus package by demanding corporate executives forfeit bonuses and take smaller pay packages makes me wonder why we do not run our own government that way? The tax payers are calling for the heads of all of these bailed out companies, the government is demanding transparency in every company that wants tax payer money. I can't help but wonder if our elected officials would do a better job if their own job security was in doubt. The way it is today once elected they are there for the entire length of their term. Why? Shouldn't they be held to the same standards if not higher ones then the ones we are all held to at our places of employment?
Call them what ever you want Congressmen, Senators, Presidents it does not matter they are all employees and they work for us. We see it all the time every election year in fact, the candidates work tirelessly going all over the country. Then they get elected and as far as I can tell most politicians take more time off every year then most other industries. I understand the reasoning to allow presidents to run for office more then twice some deserve the opportunity to serve longer, What we should think about doing is adjusting the terms all together. Allow any president the right to run for office as much as they wish, however a system to determine whether or not they should retain their job should be put in place. A lot can be said for accountability, Where I work we are rewarded on performance much like every other industry, we are also disciplined for poor performance. I do not understand why we allow our elected officials such a long rope when we ourselves do not have one?
If we are going to change the term limits lets do it across the board at every level of government, but let us also change the way our politicans feel about their job security. If we change their view on their long term job security they just might change the way they do business in Washington.
