There are many reasons not to believe in God, at least, not the one depicted in the bible and by religion. That particular god is not only a jealous god, "he" also is subject to temper tantrums, favoritism, and frivolity. However, the worst thing about that god is that "he" is ever ready to punish and cast "sinners" into an eternal lake of fire, never mind that it was this god "himself" which gave the human race the ability to "sin" in the first place!
I find it interesting and even more suspicious that religion and the bible depict God (the real one) as a male deity. How is it possible that the intelligence which created the universe can be so lowly as to possess traits attributed to the human race? It is childish and ludicrous to believe this. It is impossible that the intelligence which created the universe is male. Is not man the most fallible creature on earth? The point is, God is an intelligence beyond human comprehension. No human being now, or in the past, truly knows what God is.
When we consider the way in which religion and the bible describe God, it is obvious that what the bible and religion did was simply attribute purely human-like traits God. The question is why? And the obvious answer is that it is because it was human beings who created the bible and religion. In writing the bible and in creating religion, man attempted to describe something that is indescribable; for no one knows the true nature of God. In its attempt to describe the indescribable, however, what the bible and religion accomplished was only to demean God down to human form. How non-creative and non-ingenious was that? Not only did the bible and religion fail miserably in their attempt to describe God, they also produced the most damaging misconception of God.
This is the worst thing human civilization could have done, for had this not occurred, today we might have a better understanding of God. The reason why so many of us are alienated from God, particularly those who are atheists and who are not sure whether or not to believe in God, is probably directly the fault of religion and the bible, which have both acted in collusion to steer a large segment of the human race away from God instead of closer.
In his book, " How To Know God," Deepak Chopra asserts that man is already hardwired to know God. When Chopra says "to know God," he means that we already "know" God in our mind whether we realize is or not. If this is true, then the only thing the advent of religion and the bible
